The Technique of Repujado

Repujado is a technique aso known as "repousée" or "embossing". Metalwork in general has a long cultural tradition. Since thousands of years ago we can already see the examples of objects crafted in this material. It is during the Middle Ages when this technique achieves a high artistic level, leaving us a legacy of highly valued and beautiful works.

Utilizing the appropriate technique of embossing on sheet metal, we must give special attention and importance to the harmony of the volumes to obtain balanced compositions, where each element has an individualized treatment, taking care of their movements and harmony within each composition. Embossing consists fundamentally in the beating of the sheet metal. The artist must select the part which he/she desires to give volume. Not all of the areas or details of the design will be embossed, but the artist will achieve a gradual relief, some parts more than others, in order to create the harmony of forms in the final design.

In the past, this technique was used exclusively in religious artists and artisans had the courage to change its style. It now has a different vision, rescuing the completely Mexican customs, ideas and themes for popular approval to come together in a colorful magic.
